In the Mayor Parlour J S Fletcher 9781493571857 Books

The setting of this novel is particularly delightful. Hathelsborough is a hidebound old market town. Its medieval buildings are honeycombed with odd nooks and crannies, secret passageways, hidden sliding walls, and secret doors, and subterranean passages. It's quite possible to slink around from one building to another unobserved. One night someone does just that, and the mayor is found murdered, stabbed in the back in his office (the mayor's parlour)with an old Spanish rapier.

His cousin Richard Brent, who finds the body, vows to bring the murderer to justice. He's a fun hero -- an impulsive young journalist with a square jaw, a masterful manner, and a brusque, off-hand way of talking that must have seemed very cool to readers in 1922, when this book was published. He's got a lot of "go," and keeps needling the police to work faster and smarter. He's attractive to women, too, and the plot includes a bit of romance.

The mayor was a reformer about to expose graft and chicanery among the town officials. Was he eliminated for this reason? We get wonderful descriptions of the sly, self-important town trustees with their "vested interests."

The plot is cleverly centered around the inquest, which keeps being adjourned in hope of new evidence. Shocking revelations emerge at every session. And suspicion shifts from one direction to another. The town is heavily populated with gossips, scandalmongers and talebearers, and the ongoing inquest brings everybody who knows anything out of the woodwork. Every court day is a field day for parlor maids, laundresses, custodians, and town characters. Then again, some people are quite distressed at being questioned.

From page one, the town (and the book) are permeated with an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. Political intrigues, love intrigues, and secretive investigations by the police. I loved every minute of it.

In the Mayor Parlour J S Fletcher 9781493571857 Books Reviews

Well written with good plot twists. Set in the 20's? in a small English village. Characters are a little one dimensional, and stereotypic, but the plot keeps things moving along.
Loved it
I recently found J S Fletcher and am enjoying his writing ...this is one of his best. His style is most enjoyable...highly recommend this as a A1 read.
Though the story takes plan in the 20's, the small town has had graft/favoritism for 300 years. Sounds like a lot of governments today. Anyway I found it a well-written story and enjoyed reading it. I have read several other books by this author and they are all different. I like these older mysteries because they don't have all the bad language and violence of some modern books.
I enjoy reading some of the older mysteries, and this was my first encounter with Mr. Fletcher. Modern readers need to be prepared for a much slower story pace. I liked the gradual character development although was not altogether as blown away as other reviewers. It indeed transports one back in history.
I'll go all in and give this one five stars. J. S. Fletcher was one of the most popular novelists of his day, and reading this story it is easy to see why. This is a murder mystery, and there are lots of twists, turns, red herrings, and a surprise ending, but, it is also a very intimate portrait of small town life vividly realized through the author's pen. I believe that this is one of J. S. Fletcher's best efforts at story telling. Anyone that reads a lot and enjoys a good book, knows when a story has that certain, indefinable, something extra that separates it from the run of the mill. To me, this story has that certain something about it.

Fans of J. S. Fletcher are familiar with the large number of novels he wrote, some decidedly better than others. To me this one really stands out as a fine example of Fletcher's skill as a story teller. Nothing is done cheaply or on the quick in setting, plot or character development with this story, every piece does it's part to make the whole. The craftsmanship and art of story telling are well displayed in this work.
