An epic setting, but a deeply personal story.

The world of Deomus has entered its Twilight Age Civilization is dying. Creatures of unspeakable origin roam freely and ancient gods stir in the dark places of the world.

To even survive this chaos, Erthus Di'Bruchae will need all the help he can get - help from those long thought dead. Yet when your one lifeline is itself having the very limit of its faith put to the ultimate test... who can you turn to? When victory is an impossible illusion and the world's doom certain, when death is certain, how far would you go for your brothers?

Join Erthus, Montciel, Frahlo and their allies on a non-stop adventure spanning from the depths of horror infested cities hidden from the sun miles beneath the surface, to the highest tower of majestic constructs as they soar through the heavens. It all begins here.

The Paladin Biography Freefall Book 1 edition by A E J Du Casse Literature Fiction eBooks

The world is Deomus in a bygone age where man, elves, and all relatively peaceful beings are on the brink of extinction. A portal was created which joined two worlds together. Evil beings, mind stealing death plagues, and orcs storm the lands. Old gods begin to awake and the light of goodness grows dimmer and dimmer.

In this world of chaos stand two brothers Montciel and Erthus Di'Bruchae and their faithful friend Frahlo who join forces to stop evil and even to fight an outcast brother who has given in to darkness. The two brothers Montciel and Erthus are the main leads but Montciel really is the main hero. They wield power which they barely understand, have scars and burdens which are deeply human and touching.

Montciel returns after almost a decade of torture from trolls. Having overcome great pain and difficulty he is host to a being, a force of Light, which grants him enormous power. Reunited with his brother and fellow friends they set out to seek and destroy evil as if it were a grand lark. However they get caught up in mankind's last struggle to survive and must face their own demons. Montciel fights the Light being which threatens to devour him, Erthus faces the fears of inadequacy, and Frahlo battles a millennium old evil which has made its mark in him. Together, facing their own private demons, they struggle to bring peace to their war torn world.

This really was a great read and I enjoyed almost all of it. The characters and their stories were well told and I could feel the fear and pain that each man faced. The author did a great job of building the characters and exposing their emotions and struggles. The story took a direction which I never expected and I felt this made it unique from the usual fantasy quest style books. Dialogue was great and I felt it was realistic and engaging. I enjoyed the creative take on "powers" and "monsters" which I believe adds more depth to the story. The humanization of the enemy also provides a pleasant perspective of the bad guys. It's nice to see that there is more to the bad guys other than their brutish side.

So the reason I rated this book a 4 was for the construction of the story. There are numerous flashbacks, which I enjoyed, but I felt that many of them were in the wrong place. A flashback may have worked in a previous chapter or lumped with another flashback. Its little things like that which kind of broke the momentum of the story. Also we are told that Erthus will be our lead but in reality his story is second to Montciel. I did like how the author managed to tell two stories as one with his excerpts of "this is how it feels to be Erthus." But again the order of the stories and flashbacks takes away from the momentum. I really want to rate this book a 5 but its just shy of reaching that level. Great work and kudos for the author on a great first book.

How I review books in order of importance: Plot, Writing Sophistication Level, Character Depth, World Integrity, and Grammar/Spelling. See my profile for a more detailed explanation.

One of the most fascinating and well-written books I've ever read. I'm at my wits end in order to describe such brilliance.

I am still at the edge of my seat in pure anticipation for more of Bruchae's work.
